Attorney Investigator
Who we are.
Buehler Trapani LLP (BTLLP) is a woman-owned law firm in the San Francisco Bay Area specializing in impartial, third-party workplace and campus investigations across California, Washington, Illinois, and Wisconsin. We investigate diverse employment issues for public and private employers and Title IX cases for schools and universities, including allegations of sexual misconduct, harassment, discrimination, and other complaints.
BTLLP operates as a high-trust, high-responsibility team where exceptional talent is given autonomy and ownership over their work. That culture directly shapes our expectations: we pair high accountability with a sustainable annual billable target of 1,350 hours. As we expand to meet growing client demand, we are excited to invite another Attorney Investigator to join our team.
What we are looking for.
We are seeking an experienced, detail-oriented California-licensed attorney with five or more years of experience who thrives in an environment of high ownership. We want a strong contributor who takes immense pride in conducting thorough investigations, writing thorough and well-crafted reports, and serving as a trusted partner for our clients.
Fast-Track Autonomy: We need an investigator ready for a quick ramp-up. In your first 30 days, you will dive into onboarding, training, shadowing, and beginning to conduct investigations with close partner supervision. By day 90, you will be conducting independent investigations and drafting comprehensive reports with minimal partner oversight.
Advising & Training: Beyond interviewing and report writing, you bring an engaging, collaborative energy. You draw on a baseline understanding of workplace dynamics, and you bring (or want to develop) excellent training skills.
What you will do.
Impeccable Interviewing & Stakeholder Engagement
Working alongside our team of attorneys, you will serve as a neutral, fair, and impartial investigator assessing complex allegations ranging from sexual misconduct, discrimination, and harassment to abusive conduct, bullying, and financial improprieties. You will meticulously prepare for and conduct investigatory interviews. You will confidently manage case momentum by communicating with clients and outside counsel to verify investigation scope, coordinate logistics, and engage with witnesses to schedule interviews and request documents.
Deep Critical Thinking & Evidence Analysis
Leading a workplace or Title IX investigation in a thorough and timely manner requires rigorous analytical capabilities. You will apply deep critical thinking to review, analyze, and evaluate documents and physical evidence.
Dedication to the Craft of Writing
We view report writing as a true craft. You will synthesize your evidentiary analysis into comprehensive investigation reports that are clear, logical, and effectively convey information to all levels of employees and management. Your goal is to produce near-final drafts that do not require heavy partner editing.
What you bring.
Experience
- At least five years of experience practicing law. Qualified candidates must be licensed to practice law in California and remain in good standing.
Subject Matter expertise
- Experience investigating or advising clients on employment-related or Title IX matters is mandatory. A background in employment litigation, advice and counsel, internal investigations, or prior neutral investigations is highly preferred.
Flawless Writing & Analysis
- Excellent legal writing and analytical skills, strong attention to detail, and the ability to problem-solve in a dynamic environment.
Professionalism & Discretion
- The ability to maintain confidentiality in sensitive client matters, work independently, and manage multiple projects and competing deadlines. Strong interpersonal skills to listen well, demonstrate sensitivity to all parties, and facilitate a defensible process.
Compensation and Where we work.
The annual salary range for this position is between $150k-180k, with final pay depending on experience/qualifications. The billable target is 1,350 hours per year. We operate as a mostly remote office, but we have a physical office in Walnut Creek where team members are welcome to work. Occasional travel to client sites and for firm meetings is required.
